Although having an out of body experience during Reiki sounds alarming, I have found that it is quite rare in my practice. In today’s journal, I explore this experience and what it can mean for both me and my clients.

Definiton of an out of body experience

An out of body experience is typically described as a phenomenon in which a person perceives their consciousness or sense of self as temporarily separated from their physical body. This can manifest as the sensation of floating above oneself, observing the body from an external vantage point, or feeling as if one exists in a space beyond ordinary physical boundaries. Such experiences are often associated with deep relaxation, meditation, or moments of altered awareness, and while they can seem surprising or even unsettling, many find them to be enlightening and profoundly peaceful.

How often can someone experience this?

Like I stated earlier, it is quite rare that my clients tell me about experiences where they feel they were floating upwards. In fact, only one client used the word levitating once that initially did worry me. I put this initial fear down to the horror movies I watched as a teenager in the 80’s. As a result of researching it, I discovered that it can indeed be a spiritual experience of enlightenment.

This latest out of body experience is very interesting.

I was performing Reiki on my client who is having a treatment for the first time for some stress relief. I relaxed her with a meditation as Reiki always flows better when there’s no restriction.

Whose aura am I seeing?

When I was over her stomach area, I felt compelled to gently move my hands in a side-to-side motion. Of course, this was done very slowly but as I was moving my hands, I felt such a oneness with my clients energy. I also began to see what I can only describe as a shadow effect surrounding and moving with my hands. I instantly thought that maybe its an aura and then I wondered whose aura is it?

It’s the first time I’ve experienced this, and I suppose it sounds naïve however, I always thought I would see colours, not a dark shadowy effect. Thankfully, I didn’t feel anything untoward and maybe it was my higher self, reminding me to go with the flow. As a result, I began feeling like I was rising up above the bed and I brought myself back down to Earth by feeling my feet firmly on the floor. Feeling safe and grounded I proceeded with the remainder of the treatment, which went very well.

Post Consultation: Out of Body Experience

It was during the post consultation following treatment that I was taken aback by what my client said.

I was seeing colours of green and purples and I felt so relaxed. At one point, I almost felt like I was leaving my body.

Whoa!

Of course, I began asking questions because this is the point of a post consultation. It is a learning opportunity as well as a moment for both of us to comprehend our experiences.

She told me that it was a good feeling and she feels lighter and refreshed.

She really enjoyed the experience.

Concluding the Out of Body Experience During Reiki

Firstly, I am not going to proclaim that I have the right answers. I’m purely using my intuition based on our conversations and feelings at the time.

I believe that my client was indeed letting go of pent-up energy that may well have been contributing to her stress levels. Perhaps this energy that she was letting go of was the shadow aura effect around my hands. Also, I experienced my out of body experience during Reiki while moving my hands gently over her stomach. Such a common place for a physical manifestation of stress. Furthermore, she was completely relaxed.

It was truly an enlightening experience and the energy was good.

Finally, throughout the treatment, I was truly connecting with my clients energy and as a result, it is no wonder we both experienced something very similar.
