If we practice gassho meditation daily, we set the foundation of our self-healing. The Japanese word gassho means the coming together of hands in a prayer position.
To begin with, my knowledge of gassho meditation stems from my daily practice of Usui Reiki. More importantly, I feel the benefits of incorporating it into my daily self-care routine, and I believe that you will to. Furthermore, you don’t have to be attuned or trained in Reiki to do this.
Mikao Usui the founder of Usui Reiki, considered it a fundamental practice for all reiki practitioners to participate in. Without a shadow of a doubt, it enhances a practitioners Reiki skills and is a wonderful tool to strengthen self-healing.
Gassho Meditation
You can practice gassho meditation whenever you feel like. Personally, I like to do mine first thing because it sets me up for the day ahead with a positive outlook. It can also be practiced before sleep with the option of incorporating gratitude. You can incorporate it into your routine however you wish to because what works for me, may not work for you. Give it a try and see how you feel.
When practicing mine, I recite the 5 Reiki principles at the beginning of my meditation, and I spend a total of 10 to 15 minutes in all.
Benefits of Meditation
Practising mindfulness meditation for at least 5 minutes a day, can bring numerous health benefits.
- Better management of stress, anxiety and depression
- Build self-esteem
- Increases your attention span
- Improve your memory
- Help you to get better sleep
- Control pain
How to do Gassho Meditation
The object of this type of meditation is to keep your attention focused on your middle fingers touching, or on the energy between your palms. An added benefit of gassho meditation is that you’re not only activating your palm chakras, you’re also enhancing your awareness of energy. Furthermore, this prevents dis-ease as per the health benefits mentioned above.
So give it a go!
- If attuned to Reiki, draw your Reiki symbols on the palms of your hands
- Sitting comfortably, bring your palms together into prayer position in front of your heart
- Take three deep cleansing breaths
- Gently close your eyes
- Repeat the 5 Reiki principles
- Focus your attention either on the tips of your middle fingers or on your palms.
Finally, if you find that you lose focus, please don’t chastise yourself. Simply, smile and bring your attention back to the tips of your middle fingers or your palms. Meditation is working for you if you observe that you’ve strayed from your focus.
